Digital recording studio PDF Print E-mail

There was a time when having your very own digital recording studio, (or a studio of any kind) was a pipe dream. The common consensus was that it was far too expensive, and in some people’s eyes, this is still the case. Actually, with the enormous leaps being made in technology, creating a digital recording studio at home is very possible.

No longer must your studio contain multi track recorders and mixdown machines that are extremely expensive. Nor must your studio be clogged up with a whole variety of equipment and the cables that go along with it. Now, you can allow digital multi track machines and computers perform the work that used to be done by an assortment of large and expensive machines.

You may expect the resulting sound from your digital equipment to sound cheap and unprofessional in comparison to large recording companies, but the gap in quality is much narrower than you might think. Yes, a top of the range professional recording studio will sound crisper and clearer than yours, but their studio will cost them a hundred times more than yours, and will certainly not produce sound that’s a hundred times better! Modern recording software (sequencers) will produce sound clear enough to be proud of.

The one problem with digital equipment is, that it is similar to traditional musical instruments in that you have to have a high skill level to get the best out of it. Irrespective of how good your equipment is, if you don’t know how to play the keyboard or properly tweak your sound, the equipment is worthless.

After setting up your digital recording studio, you will have to perform three roles to make all the effort and expense worthwhile. You not only have to be the creator of your wonderful music, you are also required to be the audio engineer and producer. The bad news is that the difference between you and the experts is many years of experience, and the knowledge gained from that. The good news is, you are not hampered by inferior equipment. The modern professional studios have compressors, limiters, computer automation and many more digital aids. An up to date software package has all of these as well, so now all you have to do is figure out how to harness its power.

If you are serious about building your own digital recording studio, you need to know that the equipment does not play great music by itself. In order to reap the benefits of all the new technology, you need to put in the hours learning how to best use it all. However, once this is achieved, you will produce music that you never dreamed possible.
