When one thinks about recording sound, they wonder what a classic recording studio looks like. Recording studios have different equipment as various types of music need separate instruments. However, while recording studios are not identical, they all contain several features that are common to one another.
There are usually a whole host of rooms within a classic recording studio. All studios have a main room where the bulk of the recording is completed. It is by far the biggest room in the complex, as it needs to fit entire groups and their equipment, as well as any backing singers. Clearly, an orchestra-type band will need more space than a regular rock band.
There will generally be a room set aside specifically for the vocalist and another for the instruments. These rooms should be completely soundproofed, with the vocalist only hearing the music being played for example. This soundproofing is achieved by surrounding the room with another wall, the gap in between being filled with acoustic foam or other such material. With this successfully achieved, everyone involved can relax, safe in the knowledge that no external noises can filter in, thus causing an irritating (and expensive) delay.
Every recording studio must have a control room, to ensure that the session is monitored properly. The engineer skilfully works the mixing board, making certain that they get the best possible sound out of the musicians. If they choose, they can mix the best parts of the session together to make a perfect end product. As this is arguably the most important room in the entire studio, professional recording studios will spare no expense to make sure their equipment is top notch. When you are competing against other companies for the right to host the biggest names in the music industry, money is no object.
There should be a specific room for the whirring machines too, so that they don’t compromise the sound being generated by the studio. These companies will also have a lavish lounge in close proximity to the studio so the aforementioned stars can either take a break, or listen to what has been recorded.
While there is no set template for what a classic recording studio should look like, the majority of them will have the same basic equipment. You have to have a main studio room, there has to be a control room next to it, and, if you’re a serious company, there will be at least one isolation booth also.
